Positioned at the mesmerizing destination of Ladakh, Stok Kangri Climb can be done both by beginners as well as experienced trekkers. Although, the trek might be a difficult one and one has to face with challenges like dealing with thin air at high altitudes. But you will have the very first three days of your trek as acclimatization. 

The trek routes take you begins with an ascent to the charming Stok Village. Get ready to soak in the beauty of the region with the glacier as you continue your trek. Your trails will take you through the manoeuvring and long and steep ridge leading to the peak. Feast your eyes on Ladakh range, Zanskar range, Indus valley and Leh City. Considered as a beautiful trek, Stok Kangri is a must do trek for the one looking to conquer the mountains of Himalayas. This amazing trek takes you through some of the majestic views of the region.  A combination of the best scenes of natures welcomes you as you start your trek. You will start this exciting trek from Leh. Marvel at the sight of the amazing beauty of the region and acclimatize with the nice weather. Explore some of the most beautiful parts of Leh and learn about their culture and various places of the region. Visit the Shey and Thiksey on your second day. 

Beginning your third day, you will head out to Stok village which is full of beautiful views of the region. You will reach Chang Ma, which is a little difficult trek but the beauty of the whole place will make you forget everything. The grassy path and the scintillating streams of this region will make you fall in love with the place. On this day, your guide will tell you about the adequate challenges that you will be facing in the later part of your trek.  

From there you will continue your trek to the famous Stok Kangri which will take around 9 to 10 hours. You will be mostly ascending and reach the top of the ridge. After reaching the summit you will catch the glimpse of the stunning view the Karakoram Range to your north and Zanskar Range to your south. And just in front of you will have open grounds which are another interesting feature of the region. You will come across some of the most beautiful experiences while doing this trek.

Itinerary

  • Day 1 - Arrivel at Leh

    On your first day you will reach Leh and check into your hotel.

    Sip on tea/coffee while enjoying the views of the nearby area.

    Do note, since it is very important for you to get acclimatized in order to have a healthy journey, the first three days will be reserved for the same.

    Overnight will be spent in hotel.

  • Day 2 - Acclimatisation and Exploration of Leh

    During the first half enjoy a delicious breakfast and dash off for an acclimatisation hike of 3-4 hours.

    The latter half, you can enjoy unraveling the well-known monasteries around Leh like Shey and Thiksey.

    Overnight will be spent in hotel.

  • Day 3 - Leh (11500 ft.) to Chang Ma (13087 ft.) via Stok Village (11800 ft.)

    Today your day begins with a drive to Stok Village.Soak in the amazing beauty of the region, Leh as you continue your drive.

    The drive to the Stok village is an adventurous one and is full of natural beauty and lush green trees.

    The Stok village lies immediately to the south of Leh and it is well known for a royal palace. One can also find a small museum inside the palace which has beautiful and religious artifacts.

    Get ready to trek to Chang Ma once you reach the village. The trek starts with a little difficulty but the scenic views around with make you forget everything.

    Once you reach set up your tents for the night.

    Overnight stay at tents.

  • Day 4 - Chang Ma (13087 ft.) to Mankorma (14200 ft.)

    Today you will set off to Stok Kangri trekking after enjoying your delicious breakfast in the morning.

    Your trek route takes you through the barren grey landscape of Ladakh. From chang ma trek up to Mankorma.

    While trekking you will cross the 2-3 times small streams, it is a fairly easy trek along with the river.

    Set up your tents for the night.

    Overnight stay in tents.

  • Day 5 - Mankorma (14200 ft.) to Base camp (16300 ft.)

    A few hours trek takes you back to the base camp. This exotic base camp is a pleasurable place and lies in a grassy area.

    During the day time, you can walk on the upper areas of the campsite and enjoy the views of the surroundings.

    There are some beautiful peaks like Gulap Kangri, Parcha Kangri and many others.

    You can also take rest in the base camp to make sure that the group is ready for the next day’s trek and touring.

    You would get time to acclimatize to the weather. This is pretty necessary because in the coming days, you would find a drastic change in the climate and might experience thin air and lack of oxygen.

    Do take some warm clothes with you while you head out for this trek as the nights can be very cold.

  • Day 6 - Rest day + training day

    Today will be an easy day for the trekkers as most of the time you will spend exploring the nearby places and knowing about the place.

    Your trek leader and guide would let you know about all the different changes in the terrain.

    You need adequate knowledge and experience to go around the mountains. There might be situations where you have to trek in the sinking snow.You would find your legs sinking up to your knees.

    It is also a day when you would to take enough rest so that you are well prepared for the coming excursion.

    Overnight stay at the tents.

  • Day 7 - Base camp (16300 ft.) to Stok Kangri (20080 ft.) back to base camp.

    Wake up early and enjoy your breakfast before starting your trek.

    The route goes through glaciers and then comes to steep slopes to the summit ridge. This is a long climb, so you should be mentally strong and prepared psychologically.

    It would take somewhere between 9 to 10 hours for average climbers. Slow climbers may take another 2 to 3 hours in addition.

    At the start of the trek, after a couple of hours, you should reach to the summit of the ridge. The summit offers you great views of the area.

    Towards the north, you would get a view of the Karakoram range. The Saser Kangri dominates the sky in the north along with the Karakoram, and the Zansker ranges in the south.

    The overnight stay, as usual, would be in tents.

  • Day 8 - Base camp to Leh

    Today will be your last day of the trek back to your basecamp after enjoying your breakfast.

    You will once again come across the snow clad beauty and memorable view of mountain ranges

    The trek back could be difficult and you need to perform care and precision.

    On the same day, after you reach Leh, you would also have to cover up to Stok Village on your feet. Stok village is the final stopping point of trekking.

    From Stok village to Leh, you would have to take a drive.

    Reach Leh and get ready for your return journey back home.

      Ideal time to plan Stok Kangri trek is between July – August.

    2. What is the level of fitness expected from the participants?

      Stok Kangri is a difficult level trek. One needs to be physically fit for taking up this trek. One should be able to jog close to 4.5-5 km in 30 minutes to make your lungs strong to bear the high altitudes. The ideal preparation for a trip of this nature where you for hiking regularly or back country, particularly involving sections of steep terrain. Taking the stairs without any breaks is extremely helpful to keep yourself fit. You can start jogging every day and then do regular cycling for some time. You can also try high intensity interval workouts followed by proper stretching making your body fit enough to take up this trek. You need to start prepping yourself a month in advance for this trek and need to be strong enough to trek through rough and tough trails.

    3. What are the clothing and equipment that need to be carried from our end?

      Here is the basic checklist which should help you with your packing. As a general rule, it is advised that you should try to keep the weight of your equipment to a minimum. It is ideal to carry a backpack [40-60 L] and include the following – Trekking shoes, Thermals, Synthetic Trek pants, T-shirts, Top and bottom thick Fleece, wind-proof jackets, sunglasses, LED Torch, Head Torch, Trekking pole, Socks [2-3 pairs], synthetic hand gloves. You need to also carry a day pack of around 20 L which will hold all the toiletries – Light towel, Sunscreen [with high SPF formulation], moisturiser, lip balm, toothbrush, toothpaste, sanitizer, water bottle, Garbage bags, dryflo tube/buff, Poncho, Power bank, warmees [in case you feel cold] and medicines – Diamox 10-15 tablets, Crocin 5-6 tablets, Band-aid pack of 10, Cotton roll, soframycin, O2 [Diarrhoea], Moov/Relispray, ORS/Electral 8-10 packets, Avomine [Motion Sickness]. It is advisable to consult a doctor for medicine before packing.

    4. Which type of shoes should I carry?

      One needs proper trekking shoes during the trek and should strictly avoid sports shoes or sneakers. Since you have to walk in dense forests along with steep ascent and descent, it is advisable to have all-terrain water proof shoes. These are easily available. It is also advisable to walk in these shoes and get your feet used to it before the trek. Here are some brand recommendations – Forclaz, Columbia. Quechua, Zamberlan, Lafuma, Conquest and The North Face.

    5. What kind of food will be provided during this trek? What about safe drinking water?

      Freshly cooked food will be served during the trek. Vegetarian food will be served to the group keeping both health and taste in mind. Tea and Coffee will be served during the breaks. All the members are encouraged to eat well. Safe drinking water will be provided to all the members.

      It is advisable to carry a 60L backpack for this trek. Furthermore, weight to be carried will depend on your requirements and capacity.

      During day time, weather is more or less pleasant and it gets chilly at night. Daytime weather is clear, the temperature is around 11 degree, but duringthe night it drops up to 0 to -6 degree.

      You will be walking approx. 5-7 hours every day. Average walking distance is 10- 12 km per day.

      Trekking is extremely safe for girls. We will ensure that women are safe during the entire trek. Even if there is solo girl part of the trip, she will be provided single tent to sleep alone. If there are more than two girls, then they can share a tent. We ensure that you are never left on your own, understand your pace and be with the group.

    13. Are there any chances of sudden weather changes during the trek?

      Weather in mountain can be pretty unpredictable. Sometimes you can expect heavy rain or snowfall, all of a sudden. Climatic conditions in high altitudes vary from place to place. It is advised to take adequate time to get acclimatized to high altitudes

      Carrying medicines is important while trekking anywhere in the world. We will be carrying a first aid kit, but it is advisable to carry your own set of medicines after consulting the doctor. During the trekking, access to pharmacies is not easy. So, it’s better to carry first-aid kit. You can pack Crocin 5-6 tablets, Band-aid pack of 10, Cotton roll, Soframycin, Moov/Relispray, ORS/Electral 8-10 packets, Avomine [Motion Sickness]. It is advisable to consult a doctor for medicines before packing. Your first-aid should have anti-diarrhoea medicine such as O2, Roko, Lopamide but make sure that you don't take it unless getting to a toilet isn't an option. While you are trekking in high altitude region, you are prone to Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) whose symptoms are – headache, nausea, vomiting, poor appetite, dizziness and difficulty in sleeping. To overcome this Diamox is helpful. It is advisable to keep it handy or to have 1/2 a tablet in the morning and 1/2 a tablet 30 minutes befo

      During day time, weather is more or less pleasant and it gets chilly at night. Daytime weather is clear, the temperature is around 11 degree, but during night the temperature drops up to 0 to -6 degree. Also, the weather in mountains is highly unpredictable. It is always helpful to be prepared with multiple layers of jackets, clothes, socks and gloves.

      Himalayan water is considered one of the safest waters to consume. Water is also considered edible since it has lot of minerals, and it is purest mineral water one can consume. But for the safety of everyone, it is recommend to have boiled water or use chlorine tablet.
