About the Destination:

Roopkund trek is one of the major trails in the Himalayas that wins millions of hearts at the first expedition itself. Some of the trekkers would admire the vast greenery appearing at Ali as well as Bedni Bugyal whereas some others find the thrilling climb over the snow to the lake is the best experience any trekker can get. The forests of oak and the climb to Junargali are also considered to be the important factors making Roopkund trek an attractive one always. But the highlight is the exceptionally challenging trails from the start to the end showing us the various forms of nature elaborately.

Roopkund or the skeleton lake is situated in the Garhwal Region in Uttarakhand encompassing the unbeatable beauty of the mighty and lofty Himalayas. The lake seems to be frozen round the year, located at a high elevation and protected magnificently by the towering mountains in all sides. As the trails show multitudinous peaks of the Himalayas, Mount Trishul stands out clearly due to several factors. It is the first summit of 7000 meters tall one should climb and located near to the trail of Roopkund. Junargali, the best point from where you will get the unbreakable views of the peak is a favourite halt during this trek.

The final climb to the lake provided with the real adventure will be a lifetime experience for all. The backdrop enriched by the alpine forests and meadows will be filled with so many exciting moments.

About the Trek:

An eight day Roopkund trekking package is all set to take you to the spine-chilling cold region in the Garhwal Himalayas. The trek starts from Lohajung, the major centre of Roopkund trek. It is situated at an elevation of 3200 meters with narrow and curvy roads. Lord Curzon trail that takes you from Lohajung to Didna Village will show you the best of the rustic villages and routes. Bedni River will also play a major role in effectively creating the picturesque beauty of the place. The mixed forests of oak and bamboo will be the companions of yours to reach the beautiful village of Didna.

Ali Bugyal is the next destination which again serves you the mind blowing sights of the Garhal Himalayas and the dense thickets filled with oak forests and bamboos. The open and vast alpine meadows are the must see attraction at Ali Bugyal with animals grazing on them. Ghora Lotani, located at the other end of the ridge is one of the major halting point of this trek. From Ghora Lotani, the climb takes you to achieve better altitudes today after crossing many challenges put forth by high altitudes, zigzag passes and the rough winds. Kalu Vinayak and Bhagwabasa are the major destinations coming after Ghora Lotani.

Towards the last stretches of the trek arrives the main attractions like the laps of Mount Trishul and Junargali. These are the highest points you will reach during the Roopkund Trek after which Bedni Bugyal becomes alive again since you will have to return to this landscape to conclude the eight days of adventure.


- Though Roopkund is a high altitude trek, even beginners can enjoy this well if you want to experience climbing around 15700 feet. There is nothing to worry about this trek as the trails are directly leading you to the summit. You will not even need a guide to do the trek since there are no chances to get lost on the way.

  • Day 1 - Arrival

    You arrive at Lohajung on your own if you come alone or those who opt for transportation, reach Kathgodam.

  • Day 2 - Trek from Lohajung to Didna Village

    Your trek starts today to the Roopkund Glacier Lake.

    You will be taking the Lord Curzon trail from Lohajung and follow a steady uphill trek through the Lohajung Pass.

    From there, take a downhill trail to reach Bedni River.

    After crossing the bridge over the river, continue traversing through mixed forests of oak and bamboo to arrive at Didna Village.

    This is your first base camp on the trek route and stay overnight in tents here.

  • Day 3 - Trek from Didna Village to Ali Bugyal: Steep Trek, Oak & Bamboo Forests, Garhwal Himalayas

    After a wholesome breakfast, start off today's adventure with a steep ascend through oak forests and long stands of bamboo.

    Dwell in the astonishing views of the mighty Garhwal Himalayan ranges as they appear ahead of you.

    Reach the camping grounds with stunning views on this side of the Himalayas as you enter open alpine grazing meadows of Ali Bugyal.

    Stay overnight there in tents.

  • Day 4 - Trek from Ali Bugyal to Ghora Lotani: Easy Trek, Panoramic Himalayas, Magpie

    With an easy trek awaiting you today, you will reach the other side of the ridge; a keen eye can spot a Himalayan Magpie on the way.

    After a few hours of trekking, arrive at Ghora Lotani, which is yet again the most fascinating of destinations along the Roopkund trek; overnight camping in Ghora Lotani.

  • Day 5 - Trek from Ghora Lotani to Bhagwabasa: High Altitude Trekking, Barren Campsite, Icy Winds

    Start with today's trek after a wholesome breakfast.

    Proceed forward to reach a height ranging from 12,500-14,500 ft.

    Prepare your mind to face some challenges posed by high altitudes, zigzag passes and icy cold winds.

    Cross Kalu Vinayak before you Bhagwabasa (4,100m) campsite in a desolate and barren landscape.

  • Day 6 - Trek from Bhagwabasa – Roopkund Lake – Bedni Bugyal (via Bhagwabasa)

    After four days of continuous trekking, the most fascinating trek comes today.

    Post breakfast, tighten your shoe laces to do the tremendous trekking to Roopkund Lake.

    This uninhabited landmark in the laps of Mt. Trishul has a lot of unbelievable stories to share with its guests.

    After trekking for half an hour, you will reach Junar Gali, the highest point on this trail, and trek back to the base camp at Bedni Bugyal via Bhagwabasa.

    Witness the captivating Garhwal Himalayas in full glory extending up to Gangotri.

    Return to Bedni Bugyal and stay overnight in tents.

  • Day 7 - Trek from Bedni Bugyal to Lohajung (via Wan): Trekking, Rhododenron forests, alpine meadows

    After capturing the rejuvenating glimpses of Mt. Trishul from Bedni Bugyal on a clear day from Kanakdhar bid adieu to the nature and return to Lohajung via Wan.

    Follow steep descents, gradual climbs through forests of rhododendrons.

    After a steep descent for the Neel Ganga, arrive at Wan. From here, you’ll drive to Lohajung. Stay at Lohajung for the night.

  • Day 8 - Lohajung Exploration, Roopkund Trekking Tour Ends Here

    One of the best trips I ever did in my life is this Roopkund Trek. I was feeling holy while crossing the paths of Nanda Devi Rajjat Yatra. But it was not the season for it though. Started from Kathgodam and the journey to Lohajung was very long and that was the base camp. I stayed in a lodge over there and it was comfortable. I could see the sights of beautiful Nanda Ghunti when I was in my room. The villages on the way were picturesque and full of lush greenery. Ali Bugyal where I stayed with our team was also superb with the mighty Himalayas in the front. We started to climb the peak from here and we saw a temple and the guide told us that it was the temple of Lord Ganesha. Then we continued to our summit camp at Baghuabasa. The area was filled with stones alone and the roads were slippery as I visited the place just after monsoon but there was still slight rain in the evenings. The Roopkund Lake is a must see place I think as it is the real beauty and we can see Mount Trishul and Nanda Ghunti from Junargali. We could see some skeletons and after some time we returned to our campsite. It was a great trip with a lot of nice sights to watch.

It was a trek for 8 days and we had the best views of an area filled with amazing serenity and greenery. The last stretch of trek till reaching the lake was tiresome but the views of the lake will make you astonished. It was protected by the tall peaks in the Himalayan Ranges. The greenish blue water in the lake reflected the snow-clad peaks many times. The skeletons were scattered around the lake. It was really cold also when we reached near the lake. You can find many shops on the way and the stay was comfortable at hotels and lodges. The food was also fine. The guide and the supporting staff had a great knowledge about the places and the routes hence we liked being with them.

    It was really a good experience for me and my wife and the first trek of my wife to such an altitude became an unforgettable moment for both of us. It was an eight day trek to Roopkund Lake and we joined a group of 10 people from different places. Thanks to Mani for arranging this group for us; he is the local operator of Himalayan treks based in Haridwar and we got this package from HeyHimalays for whom he did lot of treks in the past. The breathtaking trek started at a height of about 7000 feet and then we reached 16500 feet and it was relay an awesome journey altogether through the stones and boulders but with the aim of watching the mysterious lake. There was snowfall as we trekked in the beginning of winter and the lake was started covered by snow. The debris were covered under snow I guess. The forests, the greenery and the snow-clad peaks swept us off of our feet.

    1. What is the best time for Roopkund trek?

      Roopkund trek is one of the treks which is enjoyed best in summer months. The best time to go on a Roopkund trek is during between April to June. This trek should be strictly avoided during the monsoons. During monsoons, there are flash floods and landslides. Monsoons start around the month of July.

    2. What is the level of fitness expected from the participants? Is there a minimum age?

      Roopkund trek is a moderate to difficult level trek. One needs to be physically fit for taking up this trek. One should be able to jog close to 4.5-5 km in 30 minutes to make your lungs strong to bear the high altitudes. Minimum age for this trek is 12 years.

    3. I am a first timer. Should I go for the Roopkund trek?

      Roopkund Trek is not recommended for first time trekkers/beginners. You will be going to an altitude of 15696 feet, and it requires pristine physical and mental strength. It is a moderately difficult trek. One should do other fairly easy treks, get some trekking experience of summiting high altitude, also get used to the height and the altitude.

    4. What is a suitable rucksack to buy for Roopkund Trek?

      A good quality rucksack is required for trek. You need to get a rucksack which is at least 60 L. Since weather in mountains is unpredictable, you are advised should also carry a plastic sheet to prevent the bag from getting wet, if you do not have a waterproof rucksack.

    5. Will food and water be provided?

      Freshly cooked food will be served during the trek. Vegetarian food will be served to the group keeping both health and taste in mind. Tea and Coffee will be served during the breaks. All the members are encouraged to eat well. Safe drinking water is provided to all the members throughout the trek.

    6. Is there electricity during the trek?

      Electricity is available only in village Wan, post that there is no electricity. You need to be equipped with a fully charged power bank for your smartphones. It is advised to charge your cameras and phones while in village or at guest houses, to avoid running out of charge during treks.

    7. What are the preventive facilities of Altitude illness?

      While you are trekking in high altitude region, you are prone to Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) whose symptoms are – headache, nausea, vomiting, poor appetite, dizziness and difficulty in sleeping. To overcome this Diamox is helpful. It is advisable to keep it handy or to have 1/2 a tablet in the morning and 1/2 a tablet 30 minutes before bed [kindly consult your doctor before taking any kind of medicines]. As a safety measure, the trekking packages include first aid medical kits and oxygen cylinders.

    8. Will there be porters to carry my luggage?

      Porters are available to carry the luggage. There will be an additional cost involved for hiring the porters. You need to inform regarding this at the time of booking the trek.

    9. Which type of shoes should I carry?

      One needs proper trekking shoes during the trek and should strictly avoid sports shoes or sneakers. Since you have to walk in dense forests along with steep ascent and descent, it is advisable to have all-terrain water proof shoes. These are easily available. It is also advisable to walk in these shoes and get your feet used to it before the trek. Here are some brand recommendations – Forclaz, Columbia. Quechua, Zamberlan, Lafuma, Conquest and The North Face.

    10. How cold does it really get on the trek?

      Weather is usually pleasant - cold over here. During the May to June period, daytime temperatures varies between 15 to 20 degrees and at night it tends to get drop to 7 to -2 degrees. It gets minus temperatures at night even during summers. If you are visiting during the August to October period,daytime temperatures vary between 10to 25 degrees and at night it tends to get drop to 5 to -5 degrees.

    11. Can I have liquor or smoke while we're on the trek?

      Consumption of any type of liquor or narcotic substance should be avoided and it can lead to dangerous implications. Alcohol also leads to dehydration, which you cannot afford during the trek. Smoking will cause heavy breathing problems at high altitude.

    12. What is the mystery and story behind Roopkund Lake?

      Roopkund has attracted lot of attention because of the visible human skeletal remains at its bottom when the snow melts. The story behind the Roopkund Lake Trek dates back to the 9th century when people inhabiting the place were killed in a sudden valiant storm. There skeletons lying at the of the lake are visible till date when the snow melts. The area is uninhabited, in the Himalayas at an altitude of 5,029 metres (16,499 feet). Surrounded by rock-strewn glaciers and snow-clad mountains, the lake is a popular trekking destination. There is also a shallow lake, of about two metres, which you can visit and spend some time admiring nature’s beauty. Because of the human remains, the lake has been called Skeleton Lake in recent times.

    13. What is the difficulty level of Roopkund trek?
