    On your second day, Sonmarg will be your host and the trek goes from here to the most natural locations. The third day of the trek is dedicated to the beauty that is visible from Nichnai to Vishansar Lake. On the route, you will be able to spot the rare flora in the forest regions and valleys as well as the rivulets making the entire place look so adorable. Your trek will undergo a steep descend and will lead you to a cascading waterfall that joins the river.

Itinerary

  • Day 1 - Drive from Srinagar to Sonamarg

    Arrive in Srinagar on the first day and take your time to acclimatize and enjoy the serenity. If you wish, you can take an iconic shikara experience at Dal Lake.

    In the evening, you will be taken to the famous Sonamarg and there you will be staying for the night.

  • Day 2 - Sonamarg to Nichnai via Shekdur (9 to 10 km)

    Begin the enthralling trek after breakfast at the guesthouse.

    After the first 3 to 4 kilometers, the trek would be a gradual one alongside the Sindh River and then you will be guided through the thick maple and pine forests.

    Completing the hike through the forests, you will be rewarded with the stunning views of the Sonamarg Valley and pictorial streams.

    Here onward, the trek starts descending down to take you to the snow-covered Shekdur Range.

    Relax for a while before you continue to the Nichnai, which is located at around 11,500ft above the sea level.

    Upon arrival in Nichnai, check-in into the campsite and take rest or call it a day after dinner.

  • Day 3 - Nichnai to Vishansar Lake (13 km)

    Starting early in the morning; around 08:00 am, trek towards the Nichnai Pass to enjoy the stunning views of the greenery.

    Hereafter, you will be crossing a river inorder to reach the Nichnai Pass or the Vishansar Berry.

    The pass is located at a height of 13,500 feet above the sea level.

    Then onward the trails will go for a steep descend and will lead you to a pictorial meadow of colourful flowers.

    On the trek, you may find the glimpses of a beautiful cascade that finally joins a river.

    Continue hiking till you reach a flat valley, continue towards its end and arrive at the campsite.

    To the left of the trail, there will be the arrayed Himalayan peaks and of course the Vishansar Lake; overnight stay in the camp.

  • Day 4 - Acclimatization day in Vishansar

    This day of the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek would be a light one as you acclimatize or explore the nearby places in Vishansar.

  • Day 5 -

    Trek from Vishansar to Gadsar (via Kishansar and Gadsar Pass) (11km)

    Start the trek for the day towards the lakeside and reach the Kishansar Peak, which is situated around 500 ft above the campsite.

    Then ascend to other side of the water reservoir where the trek will consist of easy and tough terrains together.

    Kishansar Lake is the upcoming destination and and finally make it to the Gadsar Pass that is perched at a height of 13,800 ft and is the highest point of this trek.

    From the pass, proceed through a flowery meadow and some of the pictorial lakes like Yamsar.

    Descend further to cross Iris and then reach the Gadsar Lake. A picturesque lake, it is adorned with the stunning beauty of exotic flowers and snow on both the sides.

    Arriving at the lakeside, report at the nearby Army Camp and complete the formalities of getting permission to pass Gadsar; ID proofs are a must for this.

  • Day 6 - Gadsar to Satsar (12 km)

    Commence the day with a walk from the army camp towards the stream.

    Brace yourself for varied terrains from super steep, flat and even land.

    Take a short break at Maengandob that is fringed by mountains.

    Reach the first of Satsar lakes, a group of seven different lakes and follow the same procedure of the previous day at the army office and later set camps near the surreal first lake of Satsar.

  • Day 7 - Satsar to Gangabal Twin lakes (9 km)

    Today, your physical and mental stability will be intimidated as your trudge through rocks and boulders ridden terrain, pass the last of the Satsar lakes and then hiking downwards for half an hour till you arrive at the forest line.

    Then comes the ascending portion which will take you to an altitude of 13,400ft; during this climb, you can witness several ridges at different heights and the quaint Gujjar huts as well.

    Behold the fascinating views of the twin lakes: Gangabal and Nundkol from the tricky summit and they are connected to each other by a picturesque stream and are known for trout-fishing.

    From there, you have to go through a sharp and rocky trail and make it to a gurgling stream and then to the Nundkol Lake.

    Trekking for around 20 minutes from the Nundkol Lake will take you to the beautiful Gangabal Lake and by crossing the bridge across the lake, you will arrive at the campsite.

    Have dinner and stay overnight at the camp.

  • Day 8 - Trek from Gangabal to Naranag (12 km, 7 hours)

    On your final day of the Kashmir Lake Trek, descend and reach Naranag, the last leg of your trek.

    Reach Naranag Village in Ganderbal District.

    If you wish, you can visit Naranag Temple. Return to Srinagar and wind up the tour.

    1. What is the fitness level required for Kashmir Great Lakes trek?

      Kashmir Great Lakes trekis considered an easy level trek. Physical preparation is mandatory, for all treks. You can start jogging every day and then do cycling for some time. Taking the stairs without any breaks is extremely helpful to keep yourself fit.

    2. What about the trek guides and leaders accompanying the trek?

      The trek is spearheaded by a professional Trek leader who has completed his Basic and Advance mountaineering course from a reputable institute are also certified in first- aid course. The trek leader will be accompanied one local guide with the route-map to support you. Rest of the team members include the kitchen staff, Porters, helpers and extra trained local supporting staff taken as a backup in case of an emergency.

    3. Do I always have to carry my own luggage?

      If you find it difficult to carry your own luggage, a porter can be arranged at a nominal cost. You should inform us at least 3 weeks in advance so that a porter or mule can be arranged for your convenience. Additional cost of approx. Rs. 300 (US$ 5) will be applicable over and above-mentioned tour cost.

    4. What is the best time to go for Kashmir Great Lakes trek?

      Ideal time to go for Kashmir Great Lake is between July and August. During this time travellers will get clear views and glimpse of all seven lakes. Although the trek is amazing all year around, it is better to avoid torrential rains in monsoon months of July to September.

    5. What is the level of fitness expected from the participants?

      Kashmir Great Lakes trekis moderate level trek and slightly difficult in phases. This trek begins as easy but gets moderately difficult with every passing day. It is advisable to spend enough time getting some additional exercise before taking up this trek. The fitter you are, after all, the more enjoyable you will find the experience. You can start jogging every day and then do cycling for some time. Taking the stairs without any breaks is extremely helpful to keep yourself fit. You can also start with brisk walk for 20 minutes every day and then some stretching. Daily Yoga practice will help you to regulate your breathing properly.

    6. What clothes and equipment should I carry?

      Make sure to carry warm and comfortable clothing as temperature can drop, pack good quality trekking shoes, slippers and extra pair of socks. It’s advisable to carry sunscreen lotion or any other skin moisturisers as the sun at the top can be harsh. Water bottles and energy bars/snacks are advisable. A Flashlight (with spare batteries) will help once the sun goes down and it’s always smart to carry insect repellent and emergency medical kit.

    7. Which type of shoes should I buy/carry?

      One needs proper trekking shoes during the trek and should strictly avoid sports shoes or sneakers. Since you have to walk in dense forests along with steep ascent and descent, it is advisable to have all-terrain water proof shoes. These are easily available. It is also advisable to walk in these shoes and get your feet used to it before the trek. Here are some brand recommendations – Forclaz, Columbia. Quechua, Zamberlan, Lafuma, Conquest and The North Face.

    8. What kind of food will be provided during this trek? What about safe drinking water?

      Freshly cooked food will be served during the trek. Vegetarian food will be served to the group keeping both health and taste in mind. Tea and Coffee will be served during the breaks. All the members are encouraged to eat well. Safe drinking water is provided to all the members throughout the trek.

    9. Which all lakes will be covered in this trek?

      Kashmiri Great Lake is an adventurous trip and it covers 7 lakes during the whole trip. This is going to be one of the most overwhelming and daring trip for you. Lakes while are covered in this trip are - Dal lake, Vishansar lake, Gangabal and Nundkol lake, Azure lake waters, Yamsar Lake, Gadsar Lake, and Satsar Lake.

    10. Will there be mobile connectivity during the trek?

      Mobile network is inconsistent during the trek. Most of the mobile networks do not work for most part of this trek. BSNL is the only mobile network that work in patches along the way (but is inconsistent).

      Kashmir Great Lakes trek is moderate level trek. The difficulty level involved is moderate and people who are enthusiastic can actually try this trek to have great satisfaction in life. Carrying luggage on you own increases your difficulty level. Hence, if you are having luggage, it must be prior informed and those luggage can be taken care of.

    12. How much do we have to trek each day?

      This whole trek goes on for 8 while days and adequate amount of walk is required on each day. A proper plan of each day will be shared with each member, which will give them confidence to take the trek. Proper in-between rest will be given as tea, snacks, meal breaks given adequate rest at regular intervals. We consider everyone’s demands and can assure that this trip is not that exhaustive, else it would be possible to enjoy the beauty of nature.

      Consumption of any type of liquor or narcotic substance should be avoided and it can lead to dangerous implications. Alcohol also leads to dehydration, which you cannot afford during the trek. Smoking will cause heavy breathing problems at high altitude.

    15. Will there be frozen lakes too on this trek?

      Since this trek is possible and can be enjoyed thoroughly in the month of July and August, frozen lake doesn’t seem possible. Frozen lakes are not part of the itinerary. We are covering the lakes which are the part of free flowing along the Himalayan range. Kashmir is considered heaven on the earth and you may encounter some of these lakes like icing on the cake.
